Celebrating World PR Day
In commemoration of World PR Day this year, The Dialogue Group will bring together Botswana-based PR practitioners from corporate and public sectors, agencies, NPOs, and retired professionals to provide guest lectures for students at the start of the university semester in August. This initiative will provide a full day of engagement between the industry and academia.
Today, on the 16th of July, we celebrate World PR Day, a day that holds special significance for me and my colleagues at The Dialogue Group. This day not only marks the global recognition of our profession but also a personal milestone as I reflect on my one-year anniversary with the business. Over the past year, we have embarked on mass transformation, restructuring our PR department to better serve our clients across various sectors.
A Year of Growth and Learning
In the last year, The Dialogue Group undertook a significant restructuring of our PR department. We recognised the need for a more robust PR offering and made a conscious decision to invest in resourcing, training, and developing our team. This included bringing in fresh graduates and immersing them in the world of PR, emphasising the role of PR as a vehicle for authentic storytelling that can drive positive change.
One of the biggest challenges we identified was the gap between industry and academia. To bridge this gap, we run a revolving program that gives undergraduates industry experience. This initiative aims to provide students with real-world insights and practical knowledge, ensuring they are better prepared for the challenges of the industry upon graduation.
The Future of PR: Driving Collaboration and Mentorship
As we look to the future, it is clear that the role of PR practitioners will become even more critical in driving collaboration between stakeholders for the greater social good. This future will require a concerted effort in training and mentoring both new aspirants and those already practicing the craft.
The Changing Landscape of PR
The survival and growth of PR will rely on practitioners being integral to both the planning and execution of corporate strategies. With more organisations embracing the principles of shared value and shared prosperity as core to their strategies, PR practitioners must ensure that these strategies are authentic and genuinely impactful.
Shared value refers to creating economic value in a way that also creates value for society by addressing its needs and challenges. Shared prosperity goes a step further, focusing on ensuring that the benefits of economic growth are widely shared among all members of society.
For PR practitioners, this means advocating for and ensuring that these strategies are authentic and genuinely impactful. PR professionals play a crucial role in shaping and communicating these efforts, ensuring that companies do not just talk the talk but also walk the walk. This involves advising clients on how to move beyond mere messaging to embody shared value in their operations and community engagements.
Key Considerations for PR Practitioners
In my upcoming contribution to the Publicis Groupe Africa Trends Report, I explore how PR professionals can play key roles in advising clients to move beyond mere messaging to embody shared value. Here are some key considerations:
1. Co-Determination with Communities: Encouraging companies to adopt a co-determined approach in identifying community needs ensures genuine shared value.
2. Holistic Integration: Shared value should be integrated into all facets of a company’s operations, reinforcing long-term commitment.
3. Community-Centric Initiatives: Prioritising initiatives such as education and environmental stewardship will drive genuine stakeholder connections.
4. Transparent Communication: Advocating for clear and honest communication about shared value initiatives builds trust and credibility.
5. Employee Engagement: Engaging employees in shared value projects strengthens both internal and external ties.
6. Long-Term Vision: Sustained impact requires a commitment to evolving initiatives that align with changing community dynamics.
7. Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including competitors, addresses broader societal challenges.
8. Education and Advocacy: Engaging in education and advocacy promotes the principles of shared value within the industry.
The Role of PR in a Dynamic World
At the heart of all these actions is where PR sits. PR practitioners are uniquely positioned to guide and shape the narrative around shared value and ensure that it resonates authentically with communities. As we celebrate World PR Day, we recognise the vital role we play in improving collaboration, driving positive change, and preparing the next generation of PR professionals to navigate the challenges and opportunities of a changing world.
At The Dialogue Group, we are committed to leading this charge, and looking forward to a future where PR continues to be a force for good in a changing world.
Happy World PR Day!
