The public relations and communications landscape is ever-changing and dynamic, and collaboration has never been more crucial, especially for women. Collaboration lies at the heart of effective PR practices, it can amplify brand messaging, build credibility, and effectively manage crises faster than ever before.
Collaboration is more than just working with others, it’s about forming strategic partnerships, sharing resources, and learning from each other to achieve mutual growth. Collaboration among women is a catalyst for development, resilience, and lasting impact. When women come together, they create supportive networks that foster shared learning, amplify voices, and open doors to opportunities that may be harder to access alone. Instead of competing in isolation, collaboration encourages the exchange of ideas, resources, and encouragement, especially in a male-dominated industry like ours.

The career path for many women is not linear. It bends and weaves through life events that require attention and time, family, motherhood, illness, and caregiving. These moments, though rich and defining, often place women at a crossroads. Do they slow down their careers or risk burnout by doing it all? Unfortunately, many are forced to prioritise and sacrifice. A study by Forbes found that motherhood alone leads to a 2.5% annual decline in the operational chances of women-led businesses. In practical terms, this means that each passing year brings new obstacles that threaten the very survival of ventures built by women.
What’s more concerning is that women-led businesses do not bounce back after periods of breaks, and without structured support, entire companies falter, not because of poor leadership or vision, but because life happened and the system wasn’t designed to absorb it.

This is where collaboration becomes not just helpful, but lifesaving. For women in PR, an industry built on relationships, influence, and storytelling, community is more than a buzzword. It’s an essential part of long-term success. In a field that constantly evolves with media trends, technological shifts, and socio-political divides, the ability to lean on others becomes a core strength. Resilience, while admirable, is no longer enough; relationships and resource-sharing must follow.
Across the profession, we see examples of how women are choosing collaboration over competition. A standout example was the inspiring collaboration among women during Hilda Bassey’s Guinness World Record cook-a-thon, an impactful campaign from start to finish, where brilliant women in communications united to create, strategise, and execute a truly record-breaking success.

Women are joining hands, pooling their expertise, opening up their networks, and being transparent about the challenges they face. Career breaks are no longer taboo. Conversations around mental health, caregiving responsibilities, and re-entry into the workforce are finding public platforms. And through these shared experiences, new pathways are being created, not just to reenter the field, but to reshape it entirely.
But collaboration isn’t only about emotional support. It’s also strategic. When women unite their voices, they wield the power to change policies, demand flexible working structures, and challenge outdated workplace cultures. They also create new opportunities, co-founding agencies, cross-promoting initiatives, mentoring younger professionals, and building platforms that represent diversity in PR.
At the forefront of these strategic collaborations is Nigerian Women in Public Relations (NWiPR), through its events, initiatives, training, and thought leadership, is helping rewrite what it means to be a woman in PR in Nigeria and diaspora. NWiPR creates spaces where women are not just seen but heard, where vulnerability isn’t weakness, but a source of strength, where ambition and empathy coexist.
By partnering with women founders, we deliver ‘The PR Business’ training, a practical training for professionals ready to launch their businesses. We also train senior female professionals to be board-ready and be part of the decision makers through our C-Suite Acceleration Program. At our core, we believe in supporting women at every stage of their career journey because when we grow together, we go further.
Most importantly, NWiPR fosters the kind of culture that understands women are not just professionals, they are whole people. They are mothers, daughters, caregivers, dreamers, and fighters. They are women who may pause, pivot, or reinvent, but who always come back stronger when surrounded by the right support.
In a polarised world, where so many systems encourage isolation or survival of the fittest, the women in public relations are choosing connection. They are building bridges over the divides between industry, sectors, life stages, and even continents. And with each bridge built, they are not only advancing their careers but reshaping the industry itself into one that is more humane, more inclusive, and more sustainable.
As we reflect on World PR Day 2025, one thing is certain: the future of public relations will be shaped by women who collaborate with courage, lead with care, and refuse to let each other fall through the cracks. Together, they are not just navigating the industry’s future; they are defining it.
